Types of Concrete Hardscapes
Sidewalk Blocks and Slabs are large pieces of concrete that have the durability to withstand heavy traffic but added style compared to poured concrete. Sidewalk Blocks and Slabs are the perfect option for sidewalks, pathways, large patios and stepping stones. We carry everything from traditional grey sidewalk slabs to Barkman's premium wood-textured Arbourwood and Bridgewood stamped slabs. Best of all, they are easy to install, so you can enjoy your new walkway in no time!

Paving Stones are smaller pieces of concrete that come in a wide variety of styles, colours, and shapes. They are a great way to add flair and colour to your landscape, and with so many options, there is something for everyone's taste! Paving Stones are perfect for small pathways, patios, firepits and landscape edging.

Paving Stones versus Poured Concrete
While poured concrete is often cheaper to install initially, it often evens out once you consider maintenance costs and aesthetics.

Concrete will show cracks, even if you have a patterned or brushed finish, and these flaws are almost impossible to repair without being obvious. Paving stones may occasionally crack, but they simply need to be removed and replaced to repair the affected area.

Stamped concrete can be a more dangerous slipping surface because it is a larger continuous slab with only a few joints that allow runoff. On the other hand, Paving stones enable snow and rain to flow readily through the joints.

While there are many options for poured concrete with regards to patterns and colours, they are unrivalled by the options available in paving stones. Paving stones come in dozens of colours, textures, and size combinations. The ultimate decision comes down to your aesthetic preferences. Visit our Knowledge Center for more considerations.

Why do my Concrete Products have a white tint?
That white or greyish tint on your slabs and pavers is called efflorescence, and although it might be a little unsightly, don't worry - it's completely normal. Efflorescence is a crystalline deposit of salts that can form when water is present in or on brick, concrete, stone, stucco or other building surfaces and then evaporates. Sometimes this haze appears on stones before installation, but it usually occurs within a month or so after installation. Remember, efflorescence is a natural process. While it may be unattractive and frustrating to see on your newly installed patio, know that it is only temporary.
